Innovative Application of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
in Smart Environments

About

The project focus is on specialized ICT technologies comprising the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The objective is to contribute to key aspects, including horizontal dimensions, such as security of systems and processes, and propose innovative solutions for the application of these technologies in two concrete vertical application domain environments:

  • Smart Manufacturing, in its plant / enterprise dimension as well as in the context of a large ecosystem of co-operating enterprises
  • Smart Energy, including the distributed electrical energy production and transfer (smart grid) as well as the dimension of a medium / large consumer, such as a Smart Building.

The project is implemented by the Industrial Systems Institute in the context of the sectoral Operational Programme “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation” (EPAnEK) of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement for the period 2014-2020 and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Work Packages

The project is structured in 4 main R&D Work Packages

WP3: IIoT & Smart Energy

It addresses important problems related to fault diagnosis of the power grid, increase in energy efficiency, and installation and management of complex Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) used in such environments. More specifically, the objectives comprise:
  • The development of methods for distributed fault diagnosis and detection of malicious attacks in the power grid
  • The development of person-centric services for the optimization of energy consumption in buildings
  • The development of mechanisms and tools for the management of the relevant IIoT-based cyber-physical systems

WP4: IIoT & Industrial / Enterprise Environment

This WP aims at studying the modern industrial / enterprise environment in the light of the recent developments related to the IIoT and cloud manufacturing technologies. Its first objective is the evolution of an emulation framework that makes feasible the integration of smart devices, plant equipment and identifiable objects (products and materials). Its second objective is the support of collaboration in a business eco-system through the exposure of operational capabilities, following a service-oriented cloud paradigm.

WP5: Secure Industrial Systems

Since industrial systems are integral parts of critical infrastructure such as industrial production and smart cities, which are the focus of this project, the main objectives of this WP are:
  • To study and define the basic models of malicious attacks in an industrial system.
  • To design the architecture of a trusted platform, responsible for security at the hardware level.
  • To design the architecture of the middleware responsible for the behavioral monitoring of the application.
  • To develop prototypes for the above modules.

WP6: Demonstrators

WP6 objective is the integration and demonstration of the project results, exploiting and enriching the institute’s research infrastructure with new modules of functionality, in order to enhance the support of the relevant R&D and dissemination activities.
